Poetry of your soul: Poets of the Fall in Minsk

So, can we already breathe out? Another (if this term can be applied to a magical, though annual event) visit of Poets of the Fall shifted the rate of the emotional state of Belarusians towards the euphoric one. And despite the fact that dense schedule of the Finnish lyrics forces them to grab their barely packed things and rush away from us; still one can be sure the sound of rejoicing of the audience in Minsk echoes in their ears. Sure it does! Not each band can boast having such an unrestrained and loud audience.

At the declared starting time 20:00 started... tedious waiting for the headliners. The supporting band Sviet Margot risked being not heard, since their set list had already been played until this time. But the overall punctuality saved the situation, and the stirring Italians found their listeners, namely a pretty well filled dance floor. What are you supposed to do when no one knows you? Right - to get acquainted. Thus vigorous guests didn't miss the chance to talk to the audience and invite the ones who wish to have a cup of... who would have thought - vodka. Stereotypes or taste preferences - up to you.

Musically it's quite an ordinary pop-rock band with the same ordinary female vocals. Nevertheless it was just right for a live show - people had fun; though I wouldn't say the music was catchy enough to make me include the band's discography into my playlist. But again, it's always individual. We'll hear the loud and cheerful musicians once again (who knows, maybe after having had their favourite drink?) at the cloakroom where they organized a kind of mini-market with their merchandise and eagerly chatted with passers by. Sweet-sweet.

'What about the Poets?' - you'd ask. We wait, got used to it. Sure, an escalated anticipation is a must have, but I assume that the event awaited for months has already had enough of it. Someone's ringing voice from the crowd for some reason called Marko, but as the tangible awkwardness occurred, he started calling 'Poets', and the crowd followed. While waiting it was the high time to refresh the plan of the flashmob, carefully prepared and printed for the ones with the memory like mine by the organizers. As it always happens with realization, smth. was missed, but Marko liked the lights and asked to turn them on during 'Daze'.

Examining a sloppy background cover, which looked like a rumpled bed sheet with the marks of mascara and a heated touch on a smeared inscription 'Poets of the Fall', I caught myself thinking that with passing years the guys don't turn to be more modest, but somehow quite the opposite.

The silhouettes arose on stage and one heard deep vocals instead of intro. Let's start! With the first chords of 'Dreaming Wide Awake' hundreds of arms flew up in the air, and the ones willing to sacrifice filming the band's appearance in the club, lit up the prepared greetings on their smartphones.

One could clearly trace the signs of recklessness in the guys' costumes, but Marko was a hands-down winner - spiked tailcoat with badges and patches combining two antipodes: refinement and recklessness. But the final word for the last one was the proper makeup.

Strong mix of  lyrics and stirring hits in the setlist fanned through the entire discography of the band, throwing flashbacks like an energetic 'Stay', dreamy 'Lift', touching 'Sleep', and burst like a hurricane straight into the fresh, but already learnt by heart by the fans of PotF 'Clearview'. Marko handled the crowd as skillfully as the microphone stand, while Olli, Jani and Jaska as if being chess pieces in a zero risk game were changing their places with enthusiasm. Looking at the guys, one can't but admire their symbiosis on stage - the slightest improvisation as the butterfly effect evoked an immediate response of other musicians. Marco gestured to Markus and he answered with the crystal words of the keyboards; the guys drew an invisible landscape in the air with guitar necks, weaving the notes-colors together and 'coloring' the palms stretched out to the stage. And of course Jari - the pulse of the picture alive: here he goes like a thunder in one's temples, but the other moment turns to be soft as grass. Still the massive drum set didn't let him hide from congratulations, and the dance floor all at once put the b-day caps on, one of which Marko tried also.

For dessert was an imperishable 'Carnival of Rust' in an alternated arrangement, which made the waves of hands on the packed dance floor go even higher electrifying the air. There was an impression that the crowd plugged to the unknown inexhaustible source of energy, since it met each track the same stormy way. After PotF gave an encore and the lights were on, just an insignificant part of people left the room. The rest at the improvised 'conductor's' command, who had climbed the stage, started calling the band, but managed just to make the security guy appear. Well, when you feel it's still a bit not enough - see it as the reason to start counting the days until the next visit of the romantic Finnish rockers takes place.

Special thanks to the organizer Concert Hall Group for the unforgettable evening!
